What a week's yacht charter really costs
Turn a weekly base rate into the real bill: 20% VAT, the APA for fuel, food and port fees, and the crew tip, per guest and per night. With the base rates of MonacoTop's Riviera fleet by size.
A charter rate is quoted as a weekly base: the yacht and her crew. The bill adds VAT on that base, an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) for fuel, food, drinks and port fees, and a tip for the crew. Enter a base rate, or keep the median of a 24–40 m yacht in our fleet, and change the percentages to see the total.
| Base rate | €69,000 |
| VAT on the base | €13,800 |
| APA (advance, unspent part returned) | €20,700 |
| Crew tip | €6,900 |
| Total for the week | €110,400 |
Per guest, for the week
€13,800
Per guest, per night
€1,971
APA is paid upfront and spent by the captain on fuel, food, drinks and port fees; you get the accounts at the end and what is left comes back. It covers expenses at their own prices, so VAT is not added on top of it.

Day yacht charter on the RivieraYacht charter costs: questions
- How much does it really cost to charter a yacht on the French Riviera?
- Add roughly 55 to 65% to the weekly base rate: 20% VAT, an APA of 25 to 35% and a crew tip of 5 to 15%. In MonacoTop's fleet the median base rate is €32,450 a week under 24 m, €69,000 for 24 to 40 m and €256,500 from 40 m.
- What is the APA?
- The Advance Provisioning Allowance is money paid before the charter for running costs: fuel, food and drinks, port and mooring fees, communications. The captain keeps the accounts and returns the unspent balance at the end. On the Riviera it is usually 25 to 35% of the base rate; each yacht on MonacoTop shows its own.
- Is VAT charged on a yacht charter in France and Monaco?
- Yes, 20% on the charter fee. The APA pays for fuel, food and fees at their own prices, which already include their taxes, so VAT is not added to the APA again.

- The custom is 5 to 15% of the base rate, depending on the service, usually handed to the captain at the end of the charter to share among the crew.
